How would you explain your research in 3 sentences to someone who is not in science?

Neuron loss is the primary cause of neuromuscular disorder. Diagnosis of certain neurological disorders can not be confirmed. Studying levels of some vital proteins as burden of disease can be correlated with levels of these biomolecules and may become markers of disease diagnosis and disease burden.

More about you

I am an avid fan of cricket and listen to music. If not in research, I would have been in teaching. Moreover, I am a pantheist and love nature.

About your work

Role of chemokines is well implicated in neuromuscular disorders. Change in their concentration coefficient in peripheral blood or CSF could act as a disease marker and provide a vital clue for predicting CNS disorders. Polymorphism and levels of certain chemokines like BDNF, VEGF, CCL-2 etc and their relation with neurodegenerative disorders are attracting the attention of researchers. We concluded that VEGF-A upregulation may indicate an activation of compensatory responses in ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) which may reflect or in fact account for increased survival of North Indian ALS patients after disease onset. Currently, I am post doctorate fellow in Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden.
